EMCR Subcommittee tips for choosing a journal: Look at the scope of the journal and search for what articles they have published in your area to make sure your work is a good fit. International journals with higher impact factors are likely to have higher rejection rates as they often receive many more papers than they can publish each year. Many higher impact journals do have fast turnaround times, so it might be worth submitting to these journals when you have a solid study design with few limitations and findings that are important for policy and practice. In addition, your findings need to be relevant for an international audience, so make sure the introduction and discussion places the work in an international context.
For example, think about why someone in New York or Germany would be interested in your findings. Journals based in different geographic locations may have more of a focus on work where findings are directly relevant to that location. If the findings of your work have a very local focus, keep this in mind when choosing a journal. Consideration should be given to who your audience is. Perhaps that audience sits outside the drug and alcohol sphere. It is worth considering journals in other disciplines e.g. Mental Health, Policy, Education, or Public Health.
*Please note the below list is NOT a comprehensive list of addiction journals. We recommend visiting the ISAJE database containing a list of Addiction journals worldwide.
